Las Vegas Preps for a Boycott

Pending alterations to immigration legislation, has the entire Las Vegas strip on defense in preparation for a possible Monday boycott.  The gaming and casino industry does not feel immune to the threat.  On this coming Wednesday, the cities leading gaming officials will convene in order to discuss options on showing empathy for the cause, while keeping their employees working.  Monday’s boycott may keep away the nuts and bolts employees that allow casino resorts to operate around the clock.

The power houses of the Las Vegas strip are intervening, backing them, and letting employees know that their work is not only necessary, but valuable.  Two decades ago, Santos Farias emigrate from Mexico to the US.  Farias has positive expectations for the meeting of Las Vegas’ top executives uniting to show support for immigration reform and persuading workers to arrive.  Farias shares, “A lot of people are thinking the way I’m thinking right now.”

Employers like Andrew Pascal, president of Wynn Las Vegas, states optimistically, “It’s important to support our company, because they’re supporting us, and I believe all workers will show up. All of them should go to work.”  But in the same breath they make it clear that they are not taking any chances, “Everything from re-scheduling, to calling upon people in the other classifications to help out, doing cross training, making sure they’re prepared to act in those capacities where we feel workers may not show up.”

Andrew Pascal is one of many company heads that have gathered under the banner of supporting their workers.  These presidents and CEOs are among the first to sign a petition that will begin its circulation on the 1st of May.  Pascal predicts, “Potentially it could have a huge impact.” He continues, “An excess of 50% of workers are of Hispanic decent.  Aside from the petition that will circulate on Monday at a number of casinos, a rally will take place at the Freemont Street Experience at 6 in the evening, in support of immigration reform.”
